USDT or USDC: which stablecoin to choose

How the USDT and USDC stablecoins differ: issuers, reserves, transparency, networks, liquidity in Kazakhstan and which to choose for exchange and storage.

USDT and USDC are stablecoins pegged to the US dollar: one token should be worth about one dollar. The difference is who issues them and how reserves are verified.

  • cheap transfers on TRC20 or TON matter;
  • you want maximum liquidity on exchanges and P2P.

When to choose USDC

  • you hold dollars in crypto long term and value issuer transparency;
  • you use services that accept only USDC.

Stablecoin risks

Every stablecoin rests on trust in the issuer's reserves. The issuers of USDT and USDC can also freeze tokens at a specific address at the request of authorities. Do not keep more in one stablecoin than you can afford to lose.

FAQ

Which is better, USDT or USDC?

For exchanging with tenge in Kazakhstan USDT is more convenient: every exchanger supports it and it is cheaper to send on TRC20. USDC suits those who value a regulated issuer and reserve transparency.

Can USDT lose its dollar peg?

Short deviations of fractions of a percent happen all the time. A serious depeg is possible if the market doubts the issuer's reserves. That is the main risk of any stablecoin.

Can I exchange USDC for tenge in Kazakhstan?

Some platforms support USDC, but the choice is narrower than for USDT. It is sometimes easier to swap USDC for USDT on an exchange and then sell USDT to an exchanger.
