Cold wallet: how to store crypto offline
What a cold wallet is, how it differs from a hot wallet, how to choose a hardware wallet, where to buy one in Kazakhstan and how not to lose access to your funds.
Hot and cold wallets
| Hot | Cold | |
|---|---|---|
| Where keys live | On an internet-connected phone or computer | On an offline device |
| Convenience | High | Lower, the device must be connected |
| Hack protection | Medium | High |
| Best for | Daily transfers | Large amounts and long-term storage |
Types of cold storage
- Hardware wallet. A device that signs transactions internally. The most convenient option.
- Paper wallet. A key written on paper. Rarely used today because it is inconvenient.
- Offline phone. An old smartphone with no SIM or Wi-Fi running a wallet app.
How to choose and buy a hardware wallet
- Choose well-known brands with open documentation and support for USDT on the network you need.
- Buy only from the official manufacturer or an authorised reseller. No second-hand devices or private sales.
- Check that the packaging is sealed and the device generates the seed phrase itself on first setup.
The main rule
A cold wallet is only as secure as its seed phrase. The lesson on the seed phrase explains how to store it, and general rules are in safe storage.
FAQ
What is a cold wallet?
A way of storage where private keys never touch an internet-connected device. Most often it is a hardware wallet that looks like a USB stick.
Do I need a cold wallet for small amounts?
Not necessarily. For amounts you move regularly, a reliable hot wallet with a safely stored seed phrase is enough.
What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?
Your funds are safe if you have the seed phrase: you can restore it on a new device. Without the seed phrase access is lost forever.
