Seed phrase: what it is and how to store it
What a 12 or 24-word crypto wallet seed phrase is, why you must never show it to anyone, how to write it down and store it, and what to do if it may have leaked.
What a seed phrase is
When you create a non-custodial wallet, it generates 12 or 24 random words from a standard list. All the wallet's keys and addresses are derived from them mathematically. Losing your phone is not a problem if the seed phrase is saved. Losing the seed phrase means losing access forever.
How to write it down
- Write the words on paper in pen, in order, with numbers.
- Check the spelling of every word.
- Make a second copy and keep it in a different place.
- For long-term storage a metal plate works: it does not burn or get wet.
What not to do
- take photos or screenshots;
- store it in notes, email, messengers or the cloud;
- enter it on websites or in "wallet check" and "sync" forms;
- read it out over the phone or show it on a video call.
If the seed phrase may have leaked
- Create a new wallet with a new seed phrase right away.
- Move all funds to the new address.
- Stop using the old wallet.
General protection rules are in the lessons on safe storage and cold wallets.
FAQ
What is a seed phrase?
A set of 12 or 24 words from which the wallet derives all private keys. With it the wallet can be restored on any device.
Can I keep the seed phrase on my phone or in the cloud?
Better not. Screenshots, notes and cloud storage can be hacked or synced to someone else's device. Paper or a metal plate in a safe place is more reliable.
Can wallet support ask for my seed phrase?
No, never. Anyone who asks for a seed phrase is trying to steal the funds.
